The abdomen is one of the first places we notice when we gain weight. Even months at the gym will not give the results that we desperately desire. Weight fluctuations and pregnancy stretch the muscles and skin so that we can never regain the tone and shape we once had. An Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that tightens the abdominal muscles and removes extra fat, skin and stretch marks, permanently. Best of all, it means no more need to do abdominal crunches. Men and women of all ages and body sizes can benefit from an abdominoplasty. Ideally it is not to be used as a weight loss procedure but rather a body contouring procedure.
Your initial consultation with the plastic surgeon will consist of reviewing your health history. It is important that you include any weight loss procedures or abdominal surgeries that you have had. The doctor will exam your abdomen and check for any abdominal hernia’s or abdominal weakness. The procedure will be discussed with you and other options may be presented to you. Liposuction is a procedure that may increase your final cosmetic result or be a possible alternative to abdominoplasty. An abdominoplasty generally can remove the area from just above the navel to the publis hairline. The navel is left attached to the abdominal wall and brought through a new area of the skin. Your abdominal muscles are tightened to give you a firm, flat look. The incision is low on the abdomen and can be covered with a bikini. Your surgeon will discuss what the possible complications and expected outcome of the surgery are.
An abdominoplasty will require you to be in the hospital for one to two days. During the first week after surgery you will have to walk in a “stooped over” position. There are two drains in place and you will have an abdominal binder in place for six weeks. Activity needs to be restricted for six weeks. You may need to take time off from work if your job requires a lot of physical activity. For most jobs, our patients are back to work in two weeks.
Abdominoplasty is normally considered a cosmetic procedure and not covered by insurance. After the initial consultation, our staff will visit with you on the costs of the procedure.
