As a child, growing up is never easy, but for a child with prominent ears, social situations can be torture. As a parent it is heartbreaking to witness the ridicule and watch your child be the focus of cruel teasing. We also see many adults who wish to correct their prominent ears.
Ear surgery can be preformed on a child after the age of seven and occasionally, as young as five. For adults, it is a fairly simple process.
The procedure is a same day surgery. If you are an adult seeking the surgery, it can be performed in our clinic’s fully accredited operating room utilizing sedation or under local anesthesia. A child will need to be done at an out-patient facility using general anesthesia. There is an incision made behind the ear. Cartilage is removed and reconstructed to reshape the entire ear. The head dressing that is placed after the surgery is as important as the surgery itself. It generally is worn for a period of approximately five days. Recovery is fairly quick with minimal discomfort.
Otoplasty is a cosmetic procedure. It is rare that insurance will help with the cost of the surgery. There are, however, many congenital ear deformities that require extensive ear reconstruction and these are often covered by insurance. After your initial consultation, our staff will visit with you regarding the costs involved.
