Spider Veins

Spider veins on the legs are a very common problem. They may also appear on the face. A procedure called sclerotherapy is used for treatment of these bothersome colored clusters. This is a minor procedure where the veins are injected with a sclerosing solution, which causes irritation to the veins making them collapse and fade. The injections are done in our clinic without sedation.

It is important to have a consultation before scheduling the procedure. Not all veins will qualify for sclerotherapy injections. Varicose veins are large dilated veins in the legs that will not respond to injections. These varicose veins usually cause discomfort and may require surgery in a hospital setting. Sometimes the small capillaries around the ankle and foot are so small that they can not be treated. Your doctor will discuss the treatment options that are best for you. Treatment of spider veins is considered a cosmetic procedure and you will be given a quote as to what the procedure will cost.

We recommend that you bring a pair of athletic shorts to wear during the procedure. After the injections we will wrap your leg in a compression dressing. During the first few weeks it is advised that you wear support hose. There is a period of weeks where your legs will be discolored from the injections. These bruises can take a couple of months to completely fade. It is important that during this time you stay out of tanning booths and direct sunlight to reduce the risk of permanent discoloration.
