Each year approxamately 1 in 800 infants will be born with a cleft lip or palate. The defect occurs early in pregnancy while the fetus is developing. If the child is born with a separation of only the upper lip it is referred to as a cleft lip. A cleft palate is when there is a separation of the roof of the mouth and occasionally there can be both a separation of the lip and palate. There has been wonderful advancements made over the years to treat these infants and children. Surgery is usually necessary to repair the separation and may be recommended at different stages in the child’s development. There may be several physicians and therapists that develop a "team approach" to care for your child such as; a pediatrician, plastic surgeon, ear-nose-throat specialist, dentist, speech therapist, and social workers.
When treating these separations the first goal is to improve function for the infant by closing the gaps. Very often your plastic surgeon may have to "stage" the reconstructive surgery. This means that function may not be able to be completely restored with one surgery. It is most likely that revision surgeries will be needed to improve the cosmetic appearance of the lip as the child grows. When you meet with one of our plastic surgeons, he will explain in detail the repair that is recommended for your child. The surgery is done in a hospital under anesthesia. Both of the child’s arm will be gently splinted during the surgery so they are not able to touch their incisions. For a couple of days your child may have some soreness and pain at the incision site. Medications are prescribed for their discomfort. The most important role in the care of the child is that of the family. This is an emotional and stressful time for parents and family members. By working with "team" of professionals you will have the support needed for the development of a happy and healthy child.
